On the Way as a Wedding Photographer in France

Karlina and André asked me to take photos of their wedding in the Normandy. After I had an engagement photo shooting with the two of them last winter in Luxemburg, in August we now went to the atlantic coast, to Barfleur. They booked a complete reportage and an extra portrait session two days after the wedding, for which we were on the move for about an afternoon.

This was the first time I have visited the Normandy, but I took this great rough landscape into my heart at the first go. Mild climate, wide beaches, lots of nature and a wonderful bridal couple, there was nothing that could have gone wrong. First, I would like to show the photos of the portrait session, the complete reportage I will show in a few days :-)

Successful Participation in the ISPWP Summer Contest

The admission criteria of the International Society of Professional Wedding Photographers (ISPWP) are known to be extremely high, that is why I was very happy about my admission into the club of the top international wedding photographers in the early summer this year.

A few days ago, while I was in the Normandy (I will show the pictures soon in this blog), I received the notification that some of my photos performed quite well in the ISPWP Summer Contest and that I was one of the top ten winners. I am very happy about the and want to thank again the bridal couples, who made those photos possible.

Most photos, which I submitted were from one the last weddings on Sylt, correspondingly often those photos have won. You can see the photos on the ISPWP website, which is definitely worth a visit anyway, because the colleagues submitted superb photos to the competition!

These are my placings:

Roland Michels with Expert Advice on Wedding Photography in the Fotomagazin

In the Fotomagazin there is the category „Expert advice“. It is on a different topic every issue, for example fashion, architecture or landscape photography. The target group is the ambitious hobby photographer. For this magazine’s issue I was asked, if I would like to give advice on the topic wedding photography.

I then sat down for an afternoon with an editor and we ended up with ten really good advices. I enjoyed working together with the Fotomagazin and I hope that it might help the one or another hobby photographer.

So if you want to learn more about how I work and if you maybe plan to take photos of a wedding yourself then have a look at the article. If you do not want to do it by yourself, feel free to recommend me :-)

Interview with Me in the Magazine Fotowirtschaft About Wedding Photography

The professional journal Fotowirtschaft had it’s focus this time on wedding photos / wedding photography. About ten pages were about wedding reportages, photographic albums, history of wedding photography and trends in wedding photography. For me this is a sign, that wedding photography by this time has gained a high significance in the big area of photography in Germany.

Of course I am happy that my photos are featured on five pages and that my person and my wedding reportages are featured on three pages. Furthermore in this article, the wedding photographer platform „Hochzeitsfotografen Deluxe“ (meanwhile Bildpoeten) I founded with my colleague Ondro, is introduced.

By this time our platform for exclusive wedding reportages has become the reference for ambitious wedding photography in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Between the colleagues in the platform happens a strong technical exchange and many friendships emerged, which makes me especially happy and shows, that the culture of the creative wedding photography in Germany has developed very positively.

10 Tips for Better Wedding Photos

If one as a bridal couple is searching for a wedding photographer, one is browsing many portfolios of photographers with all the weddings of other couples. Sometimes one images themselves in this situation.

But every wedding is different, the photos will always be a little different to the ones that one has been seen. That is also of course a good thing. But you as a bridal couple can also do something, to make the photos better in the end. OK – firstly you could chose a good wedding photographer, who will always deliver good pictures of every wedding and will show the bridal couple from it’s best side. But there are a few more points which will help the wedding photographer to take even better photos.

My personal 10 tips for the bridal couple:

1. Grant yourself for your biggest day a nice hotel room. Often you as a bridal couple receive better conditions or a better room for the same price. The surrounding environment always influences the photos. And for you, the day becomes even a little bit better.

2. Do not economize at the make up and have the styling and hair done by someone directly at the hotel room. This way you do not have take the extra drive to the hair dresser. Consult beforehand and make an appointment to test the service.

3. Only book the service of people, who you like and who are able to behave appropriate. It is not nice to later see people dressed in Jeans and T-Shirt or people you do not like between all the festal dressed guests on the photos.

4. Try to delegate as much as possible of the organization before the wedding, so you can enjoy your most beautiful day.

5. At a wedding there will always be something that will go differently as planned or you imagined. Let those things pass by and don’t take it to heart.

6. If you are marrying in a church: Ask before, if photographing is allowed. This is not the case in every church or with every pastor. This should be checked long before the ceremony so you are able to choose another church, otherwise the disappointment might be big afterwards.

7. Plan the course of the day together with your photographer. Portraits in the Summer for example are preferably taken in the late afternoon and not in the strong sun at noon.

8. Give the photographer space to work creatively, do not dictate everything. But do tell him or her before what you wish and imagine.

9. Even if you might find it foolish, practice posing together in front the mirror before the photo shootings (which can be a lot of fun). Forget the typical „wedding poses“ and rather orientate yourself at the current fashion magazine, this way you will have the best wedding photos. Also helpful with this is an engagement shooting before the wedding.

10. Celebrate and plan the whole celebration the way you want and do not let other people tell you what to do too much. Only invite people you like. You will celebrate your wedding only one time in your life, you do not have to compromise.

If you keep in mind those 10 points, there is nothing in the way of beautiful photos.
